New Buffet

Posted by

The artist in me gets a little bored with painting everything white but the business woman in me knows that white is classic and sells, quickly. Pieces that I paint in bold colors or designs can sit for months waiting for the right nesting mother-to-be to find it. I love it when it happens having gone through three nestings myself in the past 6 years, but I have to sacrifice the artistic pieces because I lack the space to keep them.

I've have been thinking lately about adding some Mediterranean / North African inspired details to my work. It might also keep me busy with a piece for longer than a night. I do most of my work at night when everybody is asleep, but I have been working every spare moment lately and have more furniture than I can handle both in the shed, and in the house.

When I saw this piece I knew that I could do something interesting with it. It was a little expensive for a piece at the Goodwill store, but I went ahead and purchased it anyway.

My first thought was to try some gold foil on the doors.

Then I thought if I finished the buffet too quickly I would be searching for another piece the next day. I decided to give my husband a day off from delivering me furniture and started drawing some designs on the buffet. By the end of the night I had finished painting it. So much for trying to keep a piece for more than a day! I still gave my husband the next day off though.

Here is the finished piece:

I hadn't forgotten about the gold foil technique though and I was still interested in trying it.

I have this"half" hutch that I bought on Craigslist a while back. I was supposed to pick up the top half the day after, but was never able to reach the seller again. Lesson learned! Never pay full price if you're not picking the whole piece up at once. I had tried to paint it in the shed this winter, but the paint doesn't really take well with in the cold so it has been sitting there for a while.
